The Fabulous Fashion Show!

May 31, 2009

Today's Visiting Teaching Conference was funny, thoughtful, motivating and touching. The theme was:

Live Like You Believe

We watched several skits, heard from our Visiting Teaching coordinator, Dixie Zeltner, and our Relief Society President, Maria Hudson. Encouraging words about how Visiting Teaching may seem hard, but compared to the challenges we have in our lives, it really isn't hard. Lets resolve to be better and do better in building relationships with our Relief Society Sisters.

Homemade Cleaning Products

At the last women's conference that we went to I attended the homemade cleaning products class--So I put the laundry soap to the test and it passed! I actually made it, have been using it for about three weeks and am totally happy with it!

Laundry soap is SO expensive and this is just pennies to use. Its not too hard to make, just takes a little bit of time--save up some milk cartons for a week or two before you make it because you need some containers to put it in. It is safe for HE front loading machines, it is liquid and non sudsing.

Liquid Laundry Soap

1 bar Fels-Naptha Soap (grate with a grater) (Stater Bros)
1 1/2 Cups Washing Soda (Albertsons)
1 1/2 Cups Borax (Alberstons or Stater)

Boil 1/2 gallon Hot water and then add grated soap until dissolved. Keep stirring, then add other soaps until dissolved.Take off stove and keep stirring. Add 1/2 gallon cool water and stir. This stirring process will keep it emulsified. Add 1 gallon cool water and stir about every 15 minutes. At this point you have 2 gallons of water. Transfer solution to a 5 gallon bucket and add the last 1 gallon of cool water (three gallons total). Keep stirring with a long handle sppon. As soon as it will not seperate, put it into containers. Should fill up at least 3 milk containers.

Use 1/4 cup per load, give it a shake before you use it--just make sure the lid is on tight--I learned this the hard way.....

Window Cleaner

Combine 2 Tablespoons Non-sudsing ammonia
1 Pint Rubbing Alcohol
1 Teaspoon liquid detergent into a gallon jug,
add enough water to make one gallon.

You can add a couple drops of blue coloring if desired.Put into spray bottle and use as glass cleaner.

One more laundry hint: Be sure to WASH the lint screen every six months, especially if you use dryer sheets regularly. The dryer sheet leaves a waxy film on the lint guard and makes it difficult for air to pass through efficiently. Not only could it prevent a fire in your dryer, it will prolong the life of your dryer!
